Calendar Girls: graphic work on paper (2007 - Present)

My first impression of Hong Kong was its seductive advertising that permeates every aspect of life there. Advertising is the city's primary artform.

One afternoon I saw "Your Ad Here" painted in huge letters over several stories of a building in Central HK. That was the inspiration of the Calendar Girls, and here I reference the irresistable Shanghai posters from the 1920's-40s. The east/western cultural tensions of that era take on a different dimension today in Hong Kong and elsewhere, but beneath the sophistication of our modern microfiber clothing, women around the world still grapple with the same concerns as our grandmothers.
